GNCC Round 8, OH, June 7, 2009 I was still hoping for Top Amateur, but I’m on the last A row and it’s crazy hard to pass so many riders on the first lap, especially at the tight, gnarly John Penton. There were a couple of impossible bottlenecks and I just couldn’t make up the time I needed and it cost me 2 minutes on the first lap. I managed to get a 15th Overall finish, but no luck on the Top Amateur. Something strange happened with my camelback & I wasn’t able to drink the whole race, so the last 2 laps I was dizzy and cramping and I couldn’t keep off the ground. I staggered off my bike at the finish and got taken to the medics who treated me for dehydration. Anyway, hopefully the mud will stay gone and my luck will stay good for Snowshoe, which is the last GNCC before summer break. I guess it will be my last race in 200A since I just need one more to clinch the Title. It’s the day of my birthday, and maybe my last chance to try for the Top Amateur, so maybe I’ll have some luck. GNCC Round 4, SC, April 4, 2009 Going into the Big Buck GNCC I was hoping for my best finish yet this year and going for Top Amateur since it was in my home state. The track looked fun and I was ready. I was the first one around the first corner but then I got passed on the outside by Brandon Bolling. We battled for the first half lap then I broke away a little toward the end of the lap. On pit row going into the second lap my parents told me I was 23 overall so I kept pushing. The first three laps sucked because of all the traffic I was fighting through and Ashburn, who was in the Top Amateur position, had pulled me by 2 minutes by the end of the second lap. I was pushing all I had and started gaining a little at a time but it just wasn’t enough to catch him. The last two laps I went all out, but I just couldn’t pull it off. With a lap to go I had 17 minutes and 49 seconds on 2nd in my class, and at the end of the race I came out 16th overall just 6 seconds out of 15th for my best finish of the year. I’m still shooting for Top Amateur by the end of the season! So far at GNCC’s I have 4 – 1st Place finishes in 200A for the points lead. http://www.racer-results.net/results/gncc/2009/racer.asp?n=574&r=4 Next up…GNCC Round 5, Loretta Lynn’s in TN, April 19th Also…GNCC on TV, Veresus Network |

Bike Week Recap, March 14, 2009 Bike Week was fun. We left a couple of days early to ride in Crooms, FL for some sand practice; and there were a good many GNCC racers there. It was really dusty, and I bet we changed our air filter 5 times. Each time we took off a filter, there was like cake icing of dust, but our Silkolene filter oil kept every bit of sand out of the airbox and I’d have to say that it’s the best stuff we’ve ever used. On Sunday, we drove to River Ranch where I raced 200A at the first GNCC of the year for the class win and 22nd Overall. After that, we drove to Daytona for the Gator (Nat. Enduro Rnd 3) where I got 1st in 200A & 14th Overall. There was a fire in the 4th section. I don’t know what caused it, but I was one of the last ones to pass through it before the fire trucks got there. When I saw the flames, I knew I probably shouldn’t go through, but it was a race & I had to make a quick decision. So I just closed my eyes and twisted the throttle. One of my sponsors said he was “glad to hear I was on fire and smoking the competition,” which I think is pretty funny. There is a short interview in Cycle News that begins, "Fourteen-year-old Stewart Baylor has been making a splash in this year's series. The Belton, South Carolina, KTM rider has finished 14th, ninth and 14th in the first three Nationals." You can read the rest in Cycle News Issue #10, p. 48, if you want. That’s this week’s issue. Or, if you don't already have one, you can get a free trial subscription at www.cyclenews.com All they ask for is your email, so even kids can get a free trial. The second GNCC was Sunday in Georgia and I won the 200A class & 20th Overall. It was a co-sanctioned event, so I also got the Overall points for SETRA, which puts me in the lead for the SETRA Harescramble Overall for the year. I’m still pretty busted up from it though, so we’ve been taking the week off to like rest, and we’ll spend this weekend fishing. I usually ride my mountain bike in the woods and around the yard for exercise, but I haven’t ridden my motorcycle all week. I crashed my new Shoei pretty hard at the race – I was seeing blue – so I sent it to the factory to get inspected to see if it’s still good to ride in or not. They do that for free if you just mail it to them. So hopefully it will be good enough to ride next week. All in all, we couldn’t have asked for a better start to the GNCC season. Next week we go to Steele Creek in Morganton, NC for GNCC Round 3. You can watch live time scoring on www.gnccracing.com. I race Sunday at 1. All Heart, Stu |

AMA National Enduro Round 3, FL, March 5, 2009 Steward took 14th Overall and the 200A win at THE ALLIGATOR. He was off to a great start, flirting with 8th Overall at first reports, but when his fork hooked a log, he went over the bars for a banged up wrist and a slower last section. But here’s a story you gotta’ hear… …there was a forest fire in section 4. Steward was one of the first ones to get there. What did he do? 1 - Look at flames, see the other side. 2 - Back up for a runnin' go. 3 - Close eyes. 4 - Twist throttle & keep on racing. Which earned him the name “Firewalker” in the post-race interviews. Brave or stupid?...not sure. He now sits in 10th Overall Point standings for the year. http://www.moto-tally.com/nepg/standings.asp Remember to watch live time scoring on gnccracing.com this Sunday for Round 2 of GNCC Racing. Stu races at 1 (east coast time.) Mama B. |
